LAHORE, Pakistan—The violence witnessed against Sher Afghan by the lawyers is a manifestation of their attitude, their confusion and how they place themselves above the law in the name of the ‘Lawyers Movement’.
For many long months now, the so called leaders of this movement had taken upon themselves - suo motto - the agenda of restoring the judiciary, in the process making themselves unaccountable for their deeds.
These so called leaders were backed by many fellow lawyers, who, over a period of time, have repeatedly demonstrated a total lack of tolerance toward even other fellow lawyers not subscribing to the same point of view. Egged on, by these leaders, the lawyers made an uncalled for and unprovoked attack on a single, old, unarmed man. This from the Criers of Democracy! But now, no one,is ready to accept the buck!
In his press address to the media, Aitzaz Ahsan, tried first to place the blame on "police forces", then the "Caretaker Government". Last but not the least, he decided to place the blame at the door of a weak Presidency!
Anyone and everyone but himself! Squarely responsible for this incident are the leaders themselves, in urging on the Lawyers to take law into their hands. The newly empowered government had promised to deal with the issue of judiciary within a stipulated period of time. As a matter of principle, the Parliament should have been given the time stated to fulfill it's word.
But this would have stolen the limelight from certain elements. Call was given for a Long March, rallies and boycotts continued in total defiance of the Parliament and the Party policy to which Aitzaz belongs! Although Aitzaz stated his decision to resign as SCBA President, Munir Malik later stated, it is a token gesture.
Indeed!
Saanp bhi mar giya aur lathi bhi na tooti!
Aitzaz Ahsan should stop trying to pass the buck to one after another and accept responsibility where responsibility is due. This is how a leader should behave. IF he is man enough, he should not only stand by his resignation from the SCBA presidency but also as member of PPP, a party whom he has repeatedly flaunted, shamed and let down. I am ashamed today, to be a lawyer!
Are they?
I doubt it! Yasmeen A. Ali is a lawyer and a commentator based in Lahore. She can be reached at yasmeenali9@hotmail.com

Who did all the killings last night burnt alive human beings in a lawyer chamber.Who did it on May 12 2007 and who denied an enquiry into those killings? You think MQM is innocent? Posted By: orakzai| April 10, 2008 09:32:16 AM While the scene of beating Mr. Sher Afgan was telecast by Geo, he himself announced the resignation stating that despite my repeated requests my colleagues did not honor my requests. It means lawyers were involved that's why in protest he announced his resignation, but in the press conference he totally absolved lawyers and put the responsibilties on Mushraf. At the same time, Jusitice Retired Hamid Khan himself also exprssed his resentment stating that the lawyers have balcked our faces. How we will go before the people for restoration of judiciary. Mr. Al Kurd announced that he will never enter Lahore Bar again in protest. The statements given by Etizaz Ehasan, Justice R. Hamid Khan and Ali Kurd all are in confirmtiy that the lawers were very well involved. Then why Etizas is telling lie and shifting the responsibility on Mushraf. Why Nawaz & Company is absolving lawyers and Etizaz from nefarious crime. Right now the most biased TV channel is Geo and Aaj who are favouring lawyer movements and their so called leaders without any justifications. Etizaz himself speak out in the press conference that he requested media to close their camras. Why? If something happens in Punjab, Rural Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP(Strongholds of PML (N),PPP, APN or MMA) this is called reaction, conspiracy of establishment, agencies and Mushrafa and if something is happend in Karachi it is called the Gonda Gardi of MQM whereas in Karachi there are other political forces i.e. PPP, PML (N), APN and Jamat-e-Islami plus other religious parties. When these parties and their so called leaders claim the share in resources of Karachi for the people from different walk of life and ethnic groups resided there as well as for the whole Pakistan then they should blame other leaders and parties for any unpleasant incident in Karachi. Why only MQM and its leadership is blamed? All other parties and communities living in Karachi are innocent. Why they might not be involved in such incidents? Why only MQM is singled out in each and every incident? PML (N) is a party who always try to create law and order situation in Karachi so that the industries and business activities may shift to Punjab as is evident from his last two tenure. PML (N) might be behind all this situation since their leadership do not like the association and good relationship between PPP and MQM. Posted By: S. Mumtaz Haide| April 10, 2008 01:21:44 AM These are the pertinent questions that need to be put to aitzaz ahsan: 1-WHy did he ask the media to vacate the place before he tried to 'mediate' a safe passage for sher afgan 2-He said in the rhetoric that he is seeing alot of faces in the crowd whom he has seen before in the rallies. 3-According to him, later, he said that there were many non lawyers in the crowd. if so was the case then why did he ask sher afgan to come out and face the violence. 4-When Aitzaz Ahsan arrived the scene, his personal lapdog, Ashraf Gamot, (the tall, fair guy with dug in eyes) was by his side as usual, however he was clearly seen hitting Sher Afgan with a chappal. And then he was invisible at the press conference. 5-If Aitzaz Ahsan knew he couldnt control the mob then why did he allow sher afgan to come out of the relative security.
